Increase the Mowing Height

Although most homeowners prefer a lower clipped lawn, the strategy can wear out the turf structure and expose the soil to weeds.

As such, you need to raise your mowing height at all times. Ideally, it would be best to keep the grass blades 3-4 inches above the soil’s surface when mowing.

A higher mowing height creates a canopy over the ground, prevents the sun’s rays from heating any weed seeds, and inhibits germination.

Apply Fertilizer 

A regular application of fertilizer is an absolute defense against weeds on lawns. It encourages the growth of a thick turf structure that populates the soil, making it hard for weeds to grow.

Water the Lawn Properly

Watering your lawn creates a stronger root system for the grass, yielding a thick growth that inhibits weeds.

When watering, it is advisable to use an underground irrigation system running for about an hour per week on each portion of the lawn. On the other hand, if you opt for an overhead sprinkler, 4 hours of sprinkling would be ideal for each zone every week.

However, when watering the lawn, take care not to apply too much water as loose, saturated soil may weaken the roots and form a breeding ground for weeds.
